Captain Marvel Opens on International Women's Day!

Captain Marvel opens today! I was invited to a special pre-release screening in IMAX, and it definitely exceeded expectations! I don't want to give away any spoilers, but Marvel fans will be pleased with this movie. At first I was a little worried that such a strong female character would be portrayed as a caricature, or be sexualized, or have some kind of makeover montage scene, but it was none of the above. Carol Danvers is a three dimensional American girl, with a matter of fact military sensibility and a snarky sense of humor. The story doesn't even get derailed by a love story that could have possibly appeared between her character and her Kree commander.

Instead much of the plot pivots around the Kree-Skrull war, which first appears in the films in Guardians of the Galaxy, and there are some crossover appearances from heroes and villains in that series. The story is feminist without being anvilicious, with a few moments of the discrimination that she faced as an Air Force pilot peppered in Danvers' flashbacks and in her conflicts with some male characters. The women in the story are confident, capable, and feminine, taking female characters in film "higher, further, faster."

You can spot some of the stars' amazing style on the red carpet for Captain Marvel. Brie Larson, who plays Carol Danvers, and Annette Bening, who was majestic as her commander, are dressed in their civvies for press photos. I loved all of Brie Larson's outfits for her press photos.
