Sanaa: Authentic African Food at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

Inside of the Animal Kingdom Lodge is Sanaa, an African restaurant with flavors of India. In parts of Africa, especially on the southeastern side, many people have moved there from India. They brought their traditions and food culture with them, and in the cuisine of modern Africa you experience a syncretization of traditional African foods, Indian food, and Afrikaans and English traditions.

My mom and I ordered the Indian Bread Service, which features nine different spreads in increasing levels of spiciness. You can see the allergen friendly bread on the left, and the traditional naan bread on the right. One of the reasons why Disney dining is amazing is that they cater to any kind of food allergy. My mom has a selective diet and they always have options on the menu that she can eat. In fact, when you make a reservation they will have an allergy friendly menu ready so that anything you select will be healthy for you.

The different spreads include Red Chile Sambal, Cucumber Raita, Coriander Chutney, Mango Chutney, Tomato-Date Jam, Garlic Pickle, Spicy Jalapeno-lime pickle, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, and Tamarind Chutney. They were all very good and we ordered more bread to keep enjoying the spreads. Be aware, however, that they charge by the slice for extra pieces of bread.

Breakfast is served from 7am till 10am without reservations, lunch is from 11:30am to 3pm, and dinner is served from 5 till 9:30pm. They do have a basic dress code as it is a sit-down restaurant, so be sure to dress decently! I wore a sundress with a pretty african inspired print.

One of the coolest parts of Sanaa is that it overlooks the Sunset Savannah, an animal preserve in the center of the resort. The Animal Kingdom Lodge wraps around the safari in the center, so you can see the animals from almost any part of the resort if you book a savanna view room.
